LOS ANGELES — Queensrÿche is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on their 12th studio album, AMERICAN SOLDIER. The concept album, due this spring from Rhino/Atco, finds the band once again tackling some heavy subject matter, this time focusing on telling the story of war from a firsthand perspective. Singer and chief songwriter Geoff Tate has spent the last few years conducting extensive interviews with veterans and has crafted their thoughts into this epic tale. AMERICAN SOLDIER examines American wars from World War II through Iraq from the viewpoint of those in the trenches and on the frontlines. Following the album’s release, Queensrÿche plan to present tracks from the album live on an extensive spring tour of the U.S., with international dates to follow later in 2009. The first date of the tour will be a hometown gig at Seattle’s Snoqualmie Casino on April 16.

“Queensrÿche has always had incredible support from members of the Armed Services,” says Tate. “It seems like after every show, I’d end up speaking with a fan that was or had been involved with the military. The more and more I began to hear their accounts and feelings, the more I really felt a conviction to tell their story. Over the last two years, I’ve conducted dozens of one-on-one interviews with veterans of many different American wars. I listened to their amazing and moving recounts and did my best to examine war through their eyes

Un nouvel album est prévu pour le printemps 2011 :

"We are planning on a spring release," Tate tells BraveWords.com about Queensrÿche's 12th studio album. "It will be a very strong collection of songs. The topic of the album is all over the place. There's a lot of different subjects we tackle. The sound and the writing direction is probably more focused on rhythm than any of our records have been. Scott (Rockenfield; drums) and Eddie (Jackson; bass) are contributing a lot to the composition of this record, so there's a lot of focus on rhythm structure and keeping things very rhythmatic and moving. It's got a lot of very intricate bass/drum work on it that perhaps hasn't been featured on earlier albums. Therefore it's going to have a very modern sound to it. Music these days, outside of hard rock and metal, is really rhythm-oriented. There's a lot of movement to it. So we're kind of going with that as a feature on this record. Still, there's a lot of interesting guitar work as we try to push the guitar into different areas as well, while trying to stay away from the bone-head stuff like the chunk-chunk-chunk kind of thing. We're using the guitars in a more melodic sense. The band is producing it with Kelly Gray, our longtime friend and engineer (and former guitarist). We've got about three-quarters written and recorded.

When I was in New York last Friday I was playing them tracks, playing them a cross-section of the record. I didn't play them all the songs, but I played them a strong cross-section of what's on it so they can get an idea of the direction and the feel of it. It's a pretty cool record company. They're really focused on music which is refreshing. A lot of record companies you deal with are just thinking commerce. These guys are really into the art and pushing that. I enjoy talking with people like that and who see it from that point of view. That's like the old days. That pre-'90s group that had a lot of music people in record companies, that were actually interested in music, played it themselves and had a background with it. Instead of coming at it from a Harvard Business School sense.

Only time will tell of course - we'll see how the whole album cycle goes. Tom Lipsky (industry veteran and Loud & Proud boss) for example is a guy I've known for my career on a personal level and I've always admired his musical tastes and sensibilities. His heart's in the right place. I feel really comfortable with him at the helm of things. He definitely understands the band and what we're about. He's not going to make any calls that would work against our philosophy."

Mais avant ça, excellent groupe, même si Hear it in the now frontier est un cran en-dessous.

Operation Mindcrime, c'était un sérieux coup d'avance sur tous leurs concurrents de l'époque.

J'ai repris avec le Live Evolution de 2001 qui est excellent.

J'ai le live, c'est vrai.
Il est bon, mais c'est normal, vu le répertoire.

Pour tout dire, je n'ai même pas écouté Mindcrime II.

Bien décevant comparé au 1er volume.

Il y avait de l'eau dans le gaz depuis un moment entre Geoff Tate et les autres membres du groupe, la rupture semble inévitable. Alors que le chanteur se concentre sur sa carrière solo, les autres annoncent la formation d'un nouveau groupe Rising West. En effet, Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield et Parker Lundgre vont s'associer avec le chanteur de Crimson Glory : Todd La Torre.
Ce nouveau groupe se produira les 8 et 9 juin au Hard Rock Cafe de Seattle et ne rependra que des titres issus des cinq premiers Queensrÿche.

Un Queensrÿche dont Geoff Tate ne voulait pas



C’est officiel, Queensrÿche et son emblématique chanteur Geoff Tate se sont séparés pour « divergences créatives ». Le groupe insiste sur la nature pacifique de cette séparation : « Nous voulons que nos fans sachent que nous avons fait de notre possible pour trouver un terrain d’entente, mais la séparation avec Geoff Tate était la meilleure solution pour tout le monde pour avancer positivement. Nous lui souhaitons bonne chance avec ses projets futures. ». Le groupe précise également que les concerts prévus sont suspendus et un nouveau planning est en cours de réalisation.

Le départ, il y a quelques années, du guitariste Chris Degarmo, avait, dans l’esprit des fans, failli coûter la vie au groupe. Et depuis, le succès de ses disques était mitigé. Visiblement, une rupture dans l’alchimie qui avait jusque là convaincu, s’était faite. Les deux parties (Geoff Tate d’un côté, le reste du groupe de l’autre côté) ont semblé vouloir s’investir dans des projets parallèles. Un projet solo pour Tate et pour les autres, le projet Rising West, avec le chanteur Todd La Torre de Crimson Glory. Les prestations live de Rising West comportaient presque exclusivement des vieux titres de Queensrÿche. Et le projet musical avait clairement pour objectif d’écrire la musique que le groupe ne pouvait plus faire avec Geoff Tate : « nous voulons écrire quelque chose de heavy, mais se rapprochant du son de Queensrÿche, des parties de guitares mélodiques. [...]Les gens adorent le passé. [...]En tant qu’artiste, tu veux déployer tes ailes, tu veux essayer des choses créatives. [...]Donc tu te dis ‘Ok, comment pacifier les choses ? Nous ne voulons pas écrire un album qui sonne comme en 1986, mais nous ne voulons pas changer un son que les fans voient comme le fil rouge de la musique qu’ils ont aimé. « (propos énoncés dans l’émission de radio américaine Streets Of Rock & Roll). Une déclaration de Rising West qui semblait pourtant parler au nom de Queensrÿche.

L’enthousiasme de cette équipe vis à vis de Rising West était clairement affiché. Un enthousiasme d’ailleurs réciproque, La Torre, déclarant qu’il s’agissait de son groupe favori depuis ses 15 ans : « Je les ai rencontrés il y a 20 ans à une séance de dédicaces. [...]Ils m’ont signé mon album Warning, je l’ai encore. [...]Quand cela [NDLR : la collaboration sur Rising West] s’est mis en place, j’ai du me pincer… [...]Même les femmes des membres me l’ont dit, ‘Todd, ces mecs n’ont jamais été aussi heureux depuis 10 ans’. [...]Ils sourient, on se marre. On a tellement ri pendant les répétitions, c’est très confortable et naturel. Je ne pourrais pas être plus honoré. C’est un groupe légendaire qui n’a jamais eu d’autre chanteur. Donc, parmi tous ces gens dans le monde qu’ils auraient pu prendre, je me sens chanceux d’avoir été choisi. [...]Je suis dans une position unique, car beaucoup aiment critiquer : ‘C’est un clone, un imitateur, il est ceci, il est cela’. Je suis condamné quoi que je fasse. Mon style et mon phrasé sont très similaires à Geoff Tate, Bruce Dickinson et Rob Halford. Mes notes haut perchées sont agressives, comme Rob Halford. Mon vibrato est similaire à celui de Bruce Dickinson ou Geoff Tate. Les voix plus ‘pleurées’, la manière dont je dis les mots sont similaires à Geoff Tate. Je porte mes influences, mais je pense aussi que j’ai un feeling plus heavy que Geoff Tate. ».

C’est justement et évidemment Todd La Torre qui a été nommé remplaçant de Tate. Il semble clairement incarner ce que Geoff Tate ne voulait plus faire avec ses collèges. La Torre est issu de Crimson Glory (Les deux groupes, ayant démarré leurs carrière quasiment en même temps à quelques années près, étaient d’ailleurs comparés), représentant l’archétype du groupe de Heavy/Prog à voix haut perchées. On peut en déduire une volonté de la part de Queensrÿche de revenir à un son plus heavy, son dont il est de notoriété publique qu’il ne passionnait plus Geoff Tate. Il n’y a qu’à voir les expérimentations extra-metal qu’il a mis dans Queensrÿche ou, plus simplement, qu’à écouter son album solo. L’aveninr de Rising West semble par conséquent plus que compromis. Il y a de très fortes chances que les titres qui avaient été prévus pour ce projet finissent sur le prochain album de ce nouveau Queensrÿche.

Ils étaient les plus fairplay et ultra respectueux du monde rock'n'roll ... quelques accros mais jamais de tendance au charclage ...

Mais la fin devait justifier les moyens : c'est parti bel et bien en couille.

Que de remue-ménage ces derniers temps !!!!!!!!!!!!!! En effet, Geoff Tate va lancer sa propre version de Queensrÿche. L'année prochaine, il compte organiser une tournée anniversaire sous l'appellation "Queensrÿche Starring Geoff Tate".

Queensryche fans have been left bemused as sacked singer Geoff Tate delivered on his threat to launch his own version of the band.

He’s announced that next year he’ll front an “all-star lineup” for an anniversary tour under the title Queensryche Starring Geoff Tate, The Original Voice.

Last month he went to court in an attempt to stop his former bandmates using their name, arguing that they couldn’t do so without support of 80% of their company directors, which they couldn’t achieve since he was 25% of the board.

When that failed, he argued that the ruling meant they were free to call themselves Queensryche – but that he could do the same.

A brief statement via on band’s official Facebook page, which his ex-colleages are trying to regain from him, says: “This fall, Geoff Tate Electric Band will be releasing his new solo metal album on Inside Out Music, which features such label mates as King’s X, Fates Warning, Pain of Salvation and Dream Theater’s frontman James LaBrie, and many others! Geoff Tate solo tour dates with Alice Cooper beginning in November.

“Watch for the announcement of the upcoming 2013 Queensryche Anniversary Tour featuring an All-Star lineup, starring Geoff Tate, the longtime creative and driving force behind the band, whose vocals can be heard on every Queensryche song ever released!”

Fans were quick to point out that the track All I Want from 1997 album Here in the Now Frontier featured ex-guitarist Chris DeGarmo on lead vocals, although Tate provided backing.

At time of publishing, 850 people had liked the post and 325 had commented. While some of those showed support, many more expressed anger and bewilderment. Some referred to recent revelations that the singer assaulted and spat on his bandmates ahead of a concert in Brazil in April. Others discussed his argument that he’d written all of the band’s recent music, and a 2011 interview in which he suggested rock and metal fans could be “boneheads”.

… et surtout pas de son bon droit. L’ex-chanteur de Queensrÿche l’avait dit après son renvoi : « Cela va probablement être sale ». Mais comme on pouvait s’y attendre, c’est lui qui en rajoute une couche. Car, après avoir porté plainte contre ses anciens collègues pour les empêcher de continuer sans lui, arguant qu’il est la voix et l’âme de Queensrÿche, le tribunal a accordé le droit à Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield et Parker Lundgren de continuer à faire vivre le groupe avec Todd La Torre, et on se doutait que c’était un jugement qui n’allait pas le satisfaire. Mais puisqu’il détient toujours 25% des droits sur ce nom et cette musique, un pourcentage qu’il ne va certainement pas lâcher, il va s’en servir.

Et tant pis si ça va à l’opposé de ce que disait l’avocat de ses ex-coéquipiers : « Il n’a en aucun cas le droit de s’approprier le nom de Queensrÿche ni de nuire à la marque, au groupe et aux entreprises. » Il prend le droit de brouiller les cartes, ou plutôt de doubler le nombre de cartes en jeu. Billboard avait déjà repéré il y a une semaine des signes avant-coureurs qui permettaient, sans pouvoir fermement l’affirmer, de se douter qu’on allait avoir un deuxième Queensrÿche sur les bras.



Alors que Queensrÿche mettait en place son nouveau site internet (QueensrycheOfficial.com) et sa page Facebook officiels, Geoff Tate mettait à jour son propre site (en maintenance au moment où nous écrivons) où on est accueilli, en plein milieu de l’écran (voir image ci-dessus) par les mots : « Geoff Tate – The Voice Of Queensrÿche ». Des mots qu’on retrouve chez le tourneur Monterey International chargé des tournées de Tate où on trouve parmi les artistes dont la société s’occupe : « Queensryche Starring Geoff Tate The Original Voice ». De là à supposer que Geoff Tate allait faire une tournée avec son propre Rÿche, Billboard osait le supposer et a finalement mis dans le mille.

Vendredi, sur la page Facebook de Geoff Tate mais aussi celle de Queensrÿche (pas l’officielle, enfin si, ou presque, en tout cas pas l’autre, celle que Tate n’a pas cessé de gérer, oui, c’est compliqué) est publié le message suivant émanant de « Queensrÿche Starring Geoff Tate The Original Voice » : « Guettez notre annonce pour la prochaine tournée anniversaire 2013 de Queensrÿche avec un line-up all-star, avec Geoff Tate, la force créative et conductrice derrière le groupe, dont le chant peut être entendu depuis toujours sur toutes les chansons de Queensrÿche ! »

On ne sait rien pour l’heure de ce groupe all-star que le chanteur veut placer derrière lui mais pas de doute par contre sur le reste ; Geoff Tate persiste et signe : selon lui, il n’y a pas de Queensrÿche sans lui et sans lui Queensrÿche ne devrait même pas se sentir la force de prendre la route. Mais à insister ainsi, malgré tout ce qu’il peut revendiquer comme étant sa contribution à l’histoire de la bande, malgré les 25% de droit qu’il a sur ce nom, cette double-identité ne peut que nuire à l’image de Queensrÿche. Mais il est à parier qu’il ne doute pas que celui qui est le plus nuisible, c’est l’autre, car c’est toujours la faute de l’autre. Et si la justice ne peut empêcher les deux d’exister, et même en imaginant que les fans seraient prêts à suivre les deux, au bout d’un moment, il faut espérer que l’un ou l’autre fera comme L.A. Guns et se rendra compte qu’il ne doit en rester qu’un.

Je crois que je vais faire l'impasse sur les deux .
Pour revenir à Queensrÿche, je pense plutôt suivre la formation avec Michael Wilton, Scott Rockenfield, Eddie Jackson... Car ces musiciens avaient/ont la volonté de revenir à une musique proche des 4 premiers albums... Alors que Tate donnait l'impression de vouloir évolué dans un registre plus pépère... il a beaucoup perdu de ces capacités vocales.

Dans la série "Je remets de l'huile sur le feu", voici Todd La Torre. Se positionnant en tant que fan, l'actuel chanteur Todd La Torre en rajoute une bonne couche en affirmant que Geoff Tate, l'ex-vocaliste du groupe ne produisait plus la musique que les fans espéraient.

New Queensryche singer Todd La Torre says Geoff Tate wasn’t making music the band’s fans wanted to hear – and he’s talking as a fan.

The Crimson Glory frontman was confirmed as Tate’s replacement earlier this year in a messy split which has resulted in legal action and the sacked singer forming his own version of Queensryche.

But La Torre is focusing on the task in hand: leading his outfit in a direction he believes the fans want it to go. And he’s falling back on the experience of replacing former Crimson Glory singer Midnight.

He tells Mayhem Magazine: “Some would arguably say Geoff Tate is irreplaceable. I am, in fact, filling those shoes, so ‘replace’ is probably a fair term.

“To be compared, to even be in the same breath as the biggest influence in the genre is surreal – but I feel I’ve already been down this road with Crimson Glory because Midnight was a highly-revered singer, and I’ve been kind of held to the fire on that.

“I’m not worried about the naysayers who are like, ‘Fuck this guy – Queensryche will never be Queensryche without Geoff Tate.’ I respect that. I’m a fan too, so I won’t criticise someone for that opinion.”

But from his position as a fan, La Torre believes Tate’s musical interests were becoming increasingly distant from what the followers wanted.

He says: “I don’t know this from the other members – but it’s fairly evident that Tate is moving in a different direction. The music was not what the fans are really wanting, in my opinion.”

That gives rise to the conundrum he has to deal with in singing old material and helping write new songs. “If I sound too much like him I’m labelled as a clone. But if I sound nothing like him they say, ‘This guy sounds nothing like what it should sound like.’ I’m damned if I do, damned if I don’t.

“So I say, I do the best I can. Yes, my phrasing is very similar to him – it’s going to be. If I was a guitar player that grew up on Yngwie Malmsteen and Paul Gilbert, it’s going to be reflected in that playing. If you like Steve Vai, it’s going to be on your sleeve.”

But he adds: “People expect too much. Even out of Geoff Tate they expected too much. ‘Oh, he doesn’t have the range.’ Dude, the guy’s voice, in my opinion, is still fucking awesome. The problem is when you build your sound around a range that he’s known for, then you don’t deliver like a record. Queensryche is some of the hardest material in the world to sing.”

Meanwhile, Tate has released a full set of clips from his upcoming solo album Kings and Thieves.
