Jimmy Page dug up several unheard gems for the recent Led Zeppelin reissues. But there's one song that still remains unreleased – Swan Song

Jimmy Page est allé "débroussailler" certaines pépites inédites à l'occasion des récentes rééditions du Zep. Pourtant, il y en a encore une qui n'a toujours pas été publiée. Il s'agit de Swan Song.

The fertile sessions for Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti album produced a number of landmark songs, including In My Time Of Dying and Kashmir. And among them was another track that had the potential to be a Zeppelin classic. An ambitious, virtuoso instrumental titled Swan Song, it was sketched out and partially recorded during the album sessions but, frustratingly, never completed – even though, like many of his ideas, Jimmy Page would not quite let it rest.

Les sessions prolifiques de Physical Graffiti ont donné lieu à des titres marquants tels In My Time Of Dying et Kashmir. Et parmi elles, il y avait donc ce titre qui avait tout pour lui pour devenir un classique zeppelinien. Il s'agissait d'un instrumental ambitieux et virtuose sous forme d'ébauche enregistré partiellement durant les sessions de l'album. Malheureusement, cela n'a pas été finalisé même si Jimmy Page concernant les quelques idées qui lui viennent à l'esprit, n'avait pas l'habitude de les laisser "en plan".

The seeds of Swan Song were sown in early 1974 when Zeppelin reconvened to begin work on Physical Graffiti at Headley Grange, the 18th-century workhouse in Hampshire where they’d recorded their fourth album.

Les fragments de Swan Song ont été utilisés quand Zeppelin s'est réuni pour travailler sur Physical Graffiti à Headley Grange, la vieille bâtisse du 18ème siècle, située dans le Hampshire.

The band had endured a crisis the previous autumn when John Paul Jones announced that he was fed up with the relentless touring and was planning to quit the band. He even suggested, albeit with his tongue firmly in his cheek, that he was considering becoming choirmaster at Winchester Cathedral. It took all the efforts of manager Peter Grant to talk him out of it.

Le groupe avait connu une crise l'automne précédent quand John Paul Jones avait dit qu'il en avait assez de tourner et donc avait prévu de quitter le groupe. Il avait même affirmé, bien qu'il plaisantait, qu'il voulait être le chef de choeur à la cathédrale de Winchester.

But by the time the four band members got back together they were once again firing on all cylinders. Reunited, they began pooling ideas. “Some of the tracks were assembled in our old-fashioned way of running through a track and realising before we knew it that we had stumbled on something completely different,” recalled Robert Plant.

Mais à l'époque où les quatre membres du groupe se sont réunis, ceux-ci étaient dans les starting blocks. Ils ont commencé à mettre des idées en commun.

"Certains titres ont été assemblés selon la bonne vieille méthode que nous utilisions pour créer un titre. Et même avant de le connaître, nous retombions sur quelque chose de complètement différent" se souvient Robert Plant.

By contrast, Page had grand plans for a lengthy new track he was calling Swan Song. The guitarist had already plotted out the instrumental piece at his home studio in Plumpton Place, East Sussex. Even at that early stage, his vision was clear. According to Page, it featured “a number of sections and orchestrated overdubs”.

Au contraire, Page avait de grandes ambitions concernant un nouveau titre très long qu'il avait appelé Swan Song. Le guitariste avait défini cet instrumental dans son home studio à Plumpton Place dans l'East Sussex. Même au stade initial, sa vision était déjà claire. Selon Page, il comprenait 'un certain nombre de sections et d'overdubs orchestrés.'

The track was broken up into sections, two of which were recorded in late February 1974 (and which can be heard on various Zeppelin bootlegs and on YouTube). The first part opens with Page’s drifting acoustic guitar, before the John Paul Jones/John Bonham rhythm section kicks in with the sure-footed syncopation that characterised their greatest work. The second segment commences with Page again leading off, his descending riff hinting at the song’s majestic potential. Tantalisingly, he would later reveal that this epic-in-waiting would not necessarily have remained a purely instrumental track – there were plans to add other sections and even lyrics.

Le titre fut scindé en plusieurs parties , deux d'entre elles furent enregistrés fin février 1974 (parties que l'on peut entendre sur différents boots du Zep et sur Youtube. La première section s'ouvre sur une partie de guitare improvisée avant que la section rythmique assurée par John Paul Jones et John Bonham ne s'intègre dans la syncope (il s'agit d'un terme musical et non d'autre chose) particulièrement souple, caractéristique de leur travail remarquable. Le second segment débute avec un Page qui joue tout seul, ce riff descendant permettant de deviner le superbe potentiel de ce titre.Sur un air engageant, Page révèlera que cette ébauche épique ne serait pas restée à l'état d'instrumental. Des projets concernant l'ajout d'autres sections et de paroles étaient à l'étude.

So why did they leave the piece unfinished? The simple truth is that Zeppelin’s creativity was at an all-time high during the Physical Graffiti sessions. At the same time, they had also been working on Ten Years Gone, another lengthy track that incorporated similar guitar orchestration. Faced with an abundance of quality material, they could afford to leave Swan Song for another time. Consequently, it was Ten Years Gone that ended up on Physical Graffiti.

Donc pour quoi ont-ils laissé le morceau inachevé ? La vérité réside dans le fait que la créativité de Zeppelin fut en permanence élevée durant les sessions de Physical Graffiti. Ils travaillaient en même temps sur Ten Years Gone un autre très long titre qui incorporait les mêmes accords de guitare. Faisant face à tant d'idées, ils pouvaient se permettre de laisser Swan Song pour une autre occasion. Par conséquent, ce fut Ten Years Agone qui a fini sur Physical Graffiti.

But the Swan Song story didn’t end there. Zeppelin were planning to launch their own label and rumours abounded that it would be called Shag or Slut Records – a lewd reference to their notorious on-the-road antics. Instead, at a press reception in New York on May 7, 1974, it was announced that the new label would be called Swan Song, after their unfinished song. “I’d been recording this long instrumental and somebody shouted: ‘What’s the title?’” revealed Page. “I shouted back: ‘Swan Song’. And everybody stopped and said what a good name that would be for the album. From there it got carried over to being the name for our label.”

Mais l'histoire de Swan Song ne s'est pas arrêté là. Zeppelin projetait de lancer leur propre label et des rumeurs ont émergé selon lesquelles il s'appellerait Shag or Slut Records, une référence lubrique à leurs antiquités qu'ils transportaient sur la route. Au lieu de tout ça lors d'une conférence de presse, il fut annoncé que le nouveau label s'appellerait Swan Song et ce, d'après leur chanson inachevée.
Page : "J'étais en train d'enregistrer ce long instrumental et quelqu'un s'est écrié : Quel est son titre ?"" Je lui ai répondu en criant : "Swan Song !!!!!". Tout le monde s'est arrêté et a dit que ce serait un bon titre d'album. C'était plutôt un nom pour notre label.

Never one to let go of a good idea, Page talked about returning to the incomplete song to finish it off. “I’ve spoken before about a long piece I’d written,” he said in 1976. “I wanted to orchestrate the guitar and put it through various treatments. The original idea was to have four sections coming back to the same theme each time. There would be four separate melody lines dealing with the seasons. Robert will do the lyrics. I know I can work the whole thing out from the trial runs I’ve laid down. It’s a really exciting prospect.”

N'ayant pas l'intention de laisser filer une bonne idée, Page évoqua le fait de retourner travailler sur le titre inachevé afin de le finaliser. En 1976, il avait laissé entendre ceci : "Auparavant, j'avais parlé d'un très long morecau que j'avais écrit. En 1976, il avait laissé entendre ceci. Je voulais orchestrer la guitare et lui faire subir plusieurs "traitements". L'idée première était d'obtenir 4 sections afin de revenir au même thème à chaque fois. Il y aurait ainsi quatre lignes mélodiques en rapport avec les saisons. Robert écrira les paroles. Je sais que je suis en mesure de travailler sur tout le morceau à partir de l'ébauche que j'ai créée.

Page continued to incorporate elements of Swan Song into his live improvisational piece White Summer/Black Mountain Side during Zeppelin’s 1977 tour. It would reappear again during the band’s Knebworth shows in 1979, and even as late as their final European tour, in 1980. Had Zeppelin not disbanded following the death of John Bonham on September 25,1980, there’s every chance that Page would have gone back to work on the song in the studio.

Page a continué d'incorporer des éléments de Swan Song dans ses improvisations live de White Summer/Black Mountain Side pendant la tournée 77. Swan Song réapparaitra de nouveau à l'occasion des shows de Knebworth de 1979. Si Zeppelin ne s'était pas séparé à cause de la mort de John Bonham le 25 septembre 1980, il y a de fortes chances que Page serait retourné en studio pour travailler dessus.

But even that wasn’t the end of his great lost opus. Page’s first major live appearance following the dissolution of Zeppelin was as part of an all-star nine-date US tour in 1983 in aid of the ARMS charity to help multiple sclerosis-stricken ex-Small Faces bassist Ronnie Lane. With Paul Rodgers on vocals, Page performed a lengthy song called Bird On A Wing, which featured some chord structures that clearly dated back to Swan Song.

Cependant, cela ne constituait même pas la fin de ce grand morceau que l'on disait perdu. Après le split du Zep l'apparition live la plus importante de Page fut lors d'une tournée US en 1983 en compagnie d'autres stars et ce, dans le but d'aider l'association caritative ARMS Charity et l'ex-bassiste des Small Faces Ronnie Lane atteint de sclérose en plaque. Accompagné de Paul Rodgers au chant, Page a joué un long titre intitulé Bird On A Wing qui contenait des structures d'accords datant de l'époque Swan Song.

By the time Page and Rodgers formed their blues-rock supergroup The Firm, it had been revisited once again. “It was reworked with Paul Rodgers, who supplied some inspired lyrics, and it became Midnight Moonlight,” said Page, referring to the song which closed The Firm’s self-titled album in 85.

A l'époque où Page et Rodgers avaient formé leur supergroupe bluesy The Firm, il avait été de nouveau réutilisé. Page faisant référence à la chanson qui clôturait l'album éponyme de The Firm en 1985 : "Il avait été retravaillé en compagnie de Paul Rodgers qui y a ajouté quelques paroles et c'est devenu Midnight Moonlight"

Today, Swan Song has passed into Zep legend as one of the band’s great lost masterpieces – albeit one that has, tantalisingly, filtered into the ether in various incarnations. As with other unfinished Zep treasures such as Sugar Mama and Fire, it’s difficult not to wonder how significant Swan Song would have become had they actually finished it.

Aujourd'hui, Swan Song fait partie de la légende du Zep comme étant l'un des grands chefs d'oeuvre perdus du Zep bien qu'il ait filtré de façon très fréquente sous de multiples formes. Ainsi, il n'est pas difficile de nous demander quelle aurait pu être l'importance aurait pu avoir Swan Sang au même titre que d'autres trésors inachevés tels que Sugar Mama et Fire s'ils les avaient finalisés.

L'année 2018 et ce, pour célébrer le 50ème anniversaire du groupe pourrait être émaillée d'évènements en tout genre comme par exemple une statue de John Bonham érigée dans sa ville natale de Redditch et puis d'autres "choses"....

Bon ça va, 10 euros ce n'est pas trop cher, et vu la taille ça relativise l'importance du groupe ... je le mettrai à côté des chefs-d'oeuvre "AC/DC Tours de France" ... comme ça il ne sera pas trop visible ...

Quand j'ai vu le titre "Jimmy Page's Chopin Prelude n.4 - Arms Concert New York 1983" étant gratteux amateur, j'ai foncé sur youtube, play, Jimmy arrive, enlève ses bagouses, retrousse ses bras de chemise, un gars lui apporte sa guitare, je commence a être impatient, je vais assister à une leçon de guitare, il salut le public, il fait signe aux zicos et bing c'est parti.................. après 3m40 je me dis heureusement que Malmsteen est arrivé pour jouer du classique à l'électrique

The ARMS Charity Concert was a rock concert in support of Action into Research for Multiple Sclerosis envisaged by Ronnie Lane, ex-bassist for The Small Faces and The Faces, himself a casualty of multiple sclerosis.
The entire cast of musicians gathered on stage to join Eric Clapton on 2-9 & 2-10.
Then, at the concert's end, Ronnie Lane appeared on stage and led the entire cast of musicians on 2-11.

C'est quand même bizarre que cela ait été annoncé au 1er novembre.

Mais j'ai tellement de magazines et de livres sur Led Zeppelin que je me demande si c'est vraiment valable d'acheter encore cette nouvelle brochure !

J'en ai pas mal aussi, mais bon un de plus pour 10€, on se  ruine pas et ça rentre dans la collec
